Meet Dr Lionel Hi, I'm A/Prof Lionel Reyftmann, fertility specialist and reproductive surgeon

I am an internationally-trained gynaecologist and obstetrician, bilingual in French and English. My medical training was undertaken at the University of Montpellier, one of the most prestigious universities in France. After completing my medical degree, I undertook further subspecialist training in reproductive medicine at the Montpellier University Hospital. During my time as a staff specialist and lecturer there, I also completed the French equivalent of the Australian Certificate of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, known in France as the DESC (the diploma of complementary specialised studies).

In 2010, I moved to Australia with my family and was accepted for a research fellow position at the Sydney Women’s Endosurgery Centre in advanced laparoscopic surgery. In addition to a Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG), I am a member of the Australian Medical Association, the Fertility Society of Australian and New Zealand (FSANZ), and the European society for Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) and have authored or co-authored more than 30 international scientific publications on topics relating to infertility.

Fertility care with me

Patients know me for my easy-going nature and passion for ensuring they feel fully informed and educated about their fertility situation. I take pride in my ability to transform complex medical concepts into simple terms that leave you feeling confident rather than confused.

I believe the best way of making a baby is through the old-fashioned approach – under a doona! However, if this strategy isn’t working for you, I start with non-invasive treatments and natural fertility advice before moving on to assisted reproductive technologies and advanced surgical techniques, depending on your situation and personal preferences.

Get to know me a little more

As you can expect, I am fluent in French and can conduct your consultations in French or English. My move to Australia in 2010 was to follow my Aussie wife, and we are very happy raising our twins here. Outside of my professional life, I enjoy indulging my foodie side by exploring new restaurants and cafes, and taste testing the wonderful wines available in Australia. I am a keen motorcyclist and love the outdoor activities offered in the Illawarra.
